High quality, reliable, evidence-based information for healthcare professionals.

The Cochrane Reviews enables all those involved with healthcare decisions to keep up to date with all the latest evidence in their field of interest – a challenge which becomes harder each year as the volume of evidence increases.

The Cochrane Reviews solves this problem and is the best single source of reliable evidence about the effects of health care.

Cochrane reviews are based on the best available information about healthcare interventions. They explore the evidence for and against the effectiveness and appropriateness of treatments (medications, surgery, education, etc) in specific circumstances.

Those who prepare the reviews are mostly health care professionals who volunteer to work in one of the many Collaborative Review Groups, with editorial teams overseeing the preparation and maintenance of the reviews, as well as application of the rigorous quality standards for which Cochrane Reviews have become known.

  • Cochrane reviews have become known internationally as sources of high quality, reliable health information.
  • A structured format helps the reader to find his/her way around the review easily.
  • Multinational editorial teams try to ensure that a review is applicable in different parts of the world.
  • The Cochrane Reviews is published four times a year.

Your Voice

By Daniel Sonkin
Both the Manual of Clinical Psychopharmacology and Psychiatric Drug Therapy are two indispensable programs that I use in my clinical practice daily.

Several weeks ago, I was speaking with a new patient who has had a long history of debilitating depression. He informed me that he was working with his primary care physician with his medication needs. When I inquired as to the drug and dosage he had been taking, I looked up the information on my handheld device.

According to both of these programs, he was taking a sub-threshold dosage of the medication (for almost six months), which helped in part to explain his continued vegetative symptoms. Since I am not a physician, I had to be careful in approaching his doctor when inquiring as to his rationale for such a low dose of the medication. He explained to me that he didn’t think our patient suffered from real depression and therefore was only thinking that the medication would have a placebo effect.

The physician was not particularly open to hearing another point of view, so I made the decision to refer this patient to a psychiatrist (who simply increased his dosage which resulted in an almost immediate abatement of some of his more severe symptoms). I recommend these programs for all mental health professionals. More and more primary care physicians are administering these drugs without proper follow up and monitoring of their effectiveness. Having a means to quickly and accurately become familiar with this information is critical to all mental health professionals, since more and more patients are being prescribed psychotropic medications by their primary care physicians, who may not have an expertise in psychiatry.

Thanks to Skyscape for making such valuable information available in the palm of my hand.
