Your Voice

By Dr Steven Blumberg
I was happy to be asked to write a review on Skyscape's newest release entitled "Drugs During Pregnancy and Lactation", by Dr Carl Weiner. This volume is a must have for any Obstetrician, Family Practioner, or Midwife, dealing with pregnant patients on a day to day basis. At first, I was reticent about switching my reference text from the well known Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation: A Reference Guide to Fetal and Neonatal Risk, by Dr Gerald Briggs, but unfortunately, this text was last updated in 2001, and many new drugs have been released and become part of our daily prescribing patterns, in the last 2 years. The Weiner text was released on Elsevier Press in late 2003. The information presented By Drs Weiner and Buhimshi is accurate and concise. Maternal, fetal, and breastfeeding information is presented for each drug, as well as prescribing dosages and indications for use. Weiner manages to include many herbal and OTC drugs as well as prescription drugs, so that there are over 2000 drug summaries included in this volume. Packed into the dynamic Skyscape engine, clinicians are given the option of looking up specific drugs, all drugs listed by class (A,B,C,D,X) as well as giving the physician the ability to use an indication index to see all available pharmacologic choices, and their maternal-fetal risks, for a given clinical situation.

It is so much faster and easier for me to locate what I am looking for using Skyscape's version of "Drugs During Pregnancy and Lactation" that I would not consider buying the hardback version anymore. There is virtually no learning curve and the Palm is small enough to carry with me at all times. Thus, if you are interested in safety issues regarding pregnant and fetal patients, this is a wonderful resource to consider adding to your electronic library.
