Once you enroll in the Skyscape Point of Care CME program, you can begin earning Point of Care CME credits in the course of your everyday clinical work. When you encounter a patient situation that requires research, just follow the three steps below:

  1. Research the clinical question using Skyscape POC-approved resources (view resources)
  2. Select the 1-3 most relevant topics that you find
  3. Complete and submit a brief online verification form (view form)

The case review below shows how a practicing physician used Skyscape resources to resolve a challenging, real-life clinical situation while earning CME credit at the same time.

Step 1: Research a clinical question using skyscape poc-approved resources

In this case, a 35-year-old female with known HIV presented to the emergency room with unexplained symptoms of severe weakness, shortness of breath and diarrhea. She was presumed immunocompetent based on known low viral load and last CD4 count of 500.

A complete exam and work-up was performed, and Skyscape POC-approved resources were used to interpret the results. The physician consulted

After much investigation, a diagnosis of metabolic acidosis with secondary respiratory compensation was made. Additionally, it was determined that the patient's symptoms of dyspnea and weakness could be accounted for by hypokalemia, the underlying cause of which was diarrhea. Some possible causes for diarrhea in an HIV infected patient with AIDS were determined not to apply, as this patient was presumed immunocompetent.

The patient was placed on a cardiac monitor until her potassium level normalized and repeat labs were ordered. She was also supplemented with oral and IV potassium, hydrated with IV fluids and placed on the antimotility agent Lomotil.

Step 2: Select the 1-3 most relevant topics that you find

Reflecting on this case, the physician determined that the most relevant topics he found during his research were:

1) ABG and Acidosis Interpretation (Bakerman's ABC's of Interpretive Laboratory Data)

2) Hypokalemia Causes and Treatment (Griffith's 5 Minute Clinical Consult)

3) Diarrhea Causes in AIDS patients (Harrison's Manual of Medicine)

Having identified the three most relevant topics and sources, the physician was now ready to document and submit this Point of Care CME activity.

Step 3: Complete and submit a brief online verification form

In order to document this activity, the physician logged into his Skyscape account and clicked on the POC CME Verification Form in the "My CME Activity" section.

He filled out the brief form, noting the sources and topics that he used that were most relevant (identified in step 2).

The physician then clicked the button at the bottom of the form to submit it. A confirmation page was subsequently displayed stating that Skyscape had received his submission. The physician then clicked on the link to his CME Transcript...

...and found that the activity had already been added to the transcript and an electronic CME certificate was now available.

All in all, a successful use of Skyscape resources to help diagnose and treat a patient and earn CME credit in the process.
