Perfect for use on the wards By Alice V. Cheuk, M.D.

Griffith's 5-Minute Clinical Consult for PDA is an excellent resource that all practitioners should have on their hand-held devices.
It is perfect for use on the wards and on call when you need a resource that's quick and to the point, yet still detailed enough to be fairly comprehensive.
Every topic is organized the same way, starting with a brief description, epidemiology, sign/symptoms, and going through causes, diagnosis, and treatment, including medications with dosing. Information is presented in list format, making things easy to find. Some topics even include full color pictures. Subjects are organized in a Table of Contents under organ systems; topics can also be searched for in a Main Index. The program is extremely easy to navigate with clearly labeled buttons, and the program can be linked to other Skyscape PDA programs.

A solid PDA medical data base that is easy and intuitive to use. Consider me a Skyscape believer. By William Hamlin

I have had the opportunity to use the Skyscape product 5 Minute Clinical Consult through several iterations now. It continues to improve and provide more information on more conditions with each year. It is a pleasure to use such a comprehensive, up to date and interesting reference as 5MCC.

I am a Registered Nurse who works with a group of Pulmonary Physicians both in a office setting and in following our patients in several hospitals. I am pretty well grounded in the pulmonary stuff, but there is certainly a lot out there that I don't know, and when I run into this situation, 5 Minute Clinical Consult is one of the first things that I use. Many times I have been able to get a quick grounding in a subject or topic that I have heard of, but of which I had no real first hand knowledge; 5MCC provided me with the essentials in a quick and concise manner. When you consider that I can link between 5MCC and other Skyscape products, such as DrDrugs, the Washington Manual and so on, it becomes apparent that in my pocket I have a reference library second to none.

Not only am I able to review, refresh and obtain information about various conditions, but the layout and links make 5MCC an excellent teaching tool at the bedside for patients and my colleagues. More than once I have been able to provide information on a timely basis that helped explain to a patient why the physicians were doing such and so, why this drug was being used, why this test was being ordered and so on. 5 Minute Clinical Consult provides for me the ability to answer questions and address patient concerns in a timely manner. The information provided by 5MCC is relevant and well referenced. The clinical content of this program is concise and full of practical information.

It is well known that textbooks are usually outdated shortly after they are printed, if not before. 5 Minute Clinical Consult is as current as they come, and with the updates available on a timely basis, remains as current as they come. Not to mention, but I will, that textbooks have a tendency to be a little bulky, shall we say, and not nearly as user friendly as a small program on a Palm device. Textbooks also have a tendency to be borrowed and not available when you want them, and neither of these statements apply to 5 Minute Clinical Consult. This small program is ideal when you consider it's purpose-to be used on the go. When I look through the text, I am able to rapidly find information, get relevant data and make better-educated decisions. Indexes and hyperlinks bring it to a whole new level of efficiency. Usually after a major effort looking through a traditional text or journal, I am able to cull a few useable tidbits that almost relate to whatever question or condition that I am interested in. And it is pretty clear that I am not reading that traditional text or journal anywhere near the actual patient... Not so with 5 Minute Clinical Consult. It's information is immediately available and at the point of patient contact. And I can pose better-educated questions to my docs and other members of the health care team. This text is continuously revised and updated and covers a vast array of subjects, yet remains affordable.

The program runs smoothly on my device and the graphics and links make it a breeze to use. It is an excellent point of contact reference for any busy clinician. This is laid out in a very functional manner, and the indexing is very useful. A solid PDA medical data base that is easy and intuitive to use. Consider me a Skyscape believer.

Overall, 5MCC is one of the easiests PDA references to use, with a gracefully designed user interface. By John Nguyen

Skyscape's 5-Minute Clinical Consult for the PDA (5MCC) is the latest incarnation of the popular PDA-based medical reference. Based on the textbook of the same name, this reference covers a broad spectrum of common clinical topics, and a number of obscure ones as well. The portability advantage of the PDA version over the textbook version is obvious, but the other major advantage of Skyscape's PDA version is that it has an effective user interface (UI) that makes searching, navigating, and retrieving of clinical content simple and fast. I discuss some of the major aspects of the UI in the following sections.

Indexing of Topics
All topics in 5MCC are organized under each of four separate indexing systems: 1) a table of contents, which is organized by organ systems and is analagous to the table of contents of a textbook.
2) an ICD-9-CM index, 3) a medication index
4) the main index, which is analagous to the index of a textbook. The main index is used as the default, although the user is free to choose whichever indexing system is most appropriate for his particular search. Within each indexing system is a text field for entering search terms. The searching mechanism is based on a simple exact match, but returns results quickly. You enter the topic, and the content, if covered, pops up quickly. No thumbing through the pages of a thick reference.

Organization of Individual Topics
Each topic itself is subdivided into standard sections (basics, diagnosis, treatment, medications, followup, and miscellaneous) which makes it even easier to hone in on the specific information of interest. Each section is accessible using a standard interface metaphor that is easy to learn and efficient to use.

Cross-Linking of Topics
For users who, like me, own multiple Skyscape titles, Skyscape offers cross-linking of topics between different titles. So if the user is browing the topic of diabetes in 5MCC, he can automatically pop into the topic of diabetes in the Washington Manual of Therapeutics, if he has this reference on his PDA.

Summary
Overall, 5MCC is one of the easiests PDA references to use, with a gracefully designed user interface. The topic coverage is also fairly complete for a portable reference, and it should be useful to medical students, residents, and even more advanced practitioners in general internal medicine or family medicine. 5MCC does not replace a full reference textbook, but its goals are portability and ease of information access. Of course, the best way to get a feel for the application is not to read a review, but rather to try it out for yourself. The application can be downloaded for free from the Skyscape website. Much of the content will be locked, so you will not be able to get a complete feel for the depth of the content, but you will be able to get a feel for the user interface. For students, residents, and practitioners who own Palm or Pocket-PC PDAs, this application merits at least a trial download.
