Skyscape's Palm version of Stedman is easy to use, has heaps of definitions and the ability to link it to other applications increases its utility ten-fold. By Matt Miller

Excellent piece of software. I used my paper, hardbound, heavy Stedmans dictionary twice in three years because it was so cumbersome to look up. Skyscape's Palm version of Stedman is easy to use, has heaps of definitions and the ability to link it to other applications increases its utility ten-fold. Now I can look up unknown (to me) terms all the time.

Don’t let the word “Concise” in the title of this new product fool you. By Chris Helopoulos, MS, PA-C

Don’t let the word Concise in the title of this new product fool you. This electronic marvel for the Palm OS handheld is likely to be all the medical dictionary you will ever need. Stedman’s itself has been a well trusted medical reference for a long time. The Concise version seems a successful attempt to make the old standby more user friendly. This electronic version accomplishes something that even the Concise print version couldn’t: it’s quite portable.

Describing a Skyscape medical product for the PDA is like revisiting an old friend.
All of the usual convenience of the format and search engine are consistent from product to product throughout the Skyscape line. Patented SmARTbuttons along the side of the screen guide the user quickly to different views. Drop down information boxes explain the various SmARTbuttons just in case you ever forget their functions. Searching is quick and easy by simply using Graffiti or keyboard to begin to put your desired word in. The search begins before you even complete the word, often making it unnecessary to complete the input. Definitions are thorough and informative, just what we have come to expect from Stedman’s.

There is a Main Index that could be searched, though this is probably the least likely way a user is going to search Stedman’s electronic version. The quicker search is described above. Another nice feature is the ability to create your own topic list. This enables you to store a series of searches you have made in the database for a given topic and quickly refer back to them at any future time. The history of your most recent searches is easily accessible to you at any time by tapping on the h (for history) icon in the right hand corner.

Weighing in at a whopping 7800K of memory, it’s a good thing that Stedman’s works so well from external memory. In fact, this is where I store all of my Skyscape products. I use a HandSpring Visor Pro with a MemPlug Compact Flash adapter. I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough memory to install Stedman’s to my Visor and then move it over to external memory. Well, here’s a tip I discovered which I imagine would work for you users of Memory Stick and other external memory formats. I used a USB Compact Flash reader hooked directly to my PC to download Stedman’s directly from PC to Compact Flash, bypassing the PDA internal memory step altogether. I’m happy to report that it works quite well.

In all, I consider Stedman’s Concise Medical Dictionary for the handheld to be one of the most useful additions to my PDA library. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t need some clarification of a medical term or its precise spelling. It’s nice to know that I can have such a reliable authority, easily accessible and easily portable with me at all times. At $39.95 I find it a bargain compared to other medical references. I can’t wait for the day when my PDA will hold the inevitable version with pictures. (Okay, so it’s just my wish list.)
