Installation: Easy
Speed: Excellent
Crashes: None encountered

Features: The list of sections is included below:
  • Chief Complaints
  • Specific Diseases
  • Syndromes Glossary
  • Cardiology Laboratory
  • Surgical Glossary
  • Laboratory Values
  • Tables
  • Medications

The Specific Disease chapters contain the following possible subheadings on each topic:
  • Database
  • Differential Diagnosis
  • Data Gathering
  • Physical Examination
  • Follow-up
  • Common Q & A
  • Miscellaneous
  • Related Images

The formulary contains the following on each drug:
  • Dose
  • Dosage Form
  • Brand/Generic Name

There is a medication index which is contains links to the specific diseases that mention a medication as well as the formulary link.

Finally there is an ICD-9 CM index as well.

The 5 Minute Pediatric Consult is a nice upgrade from its previous version. It is more robust with more topics, more images, a chief complaints section and a nice cardiology laboratory section. The main navigation will likely be from the Main Index. In usual Skyscape fashion the index is easy to use and contains all of the Chief Complaints topics, the specific diagnoses, all of the glossary topics and medications.

The Chief Complaints topics are organized much like the specific diagnoses topics. The lists contained in the chief complaints do not link to their respective topics however, in what would seem like a natural navigation feature. There is helpful information in these lists with suggestions on how to maneuver the differentials. Many hints for physical exam findings, lab tests and more are included.

The specific diagnoses are the meat of this reference and here is where the 5 Minute Pediatric Consult shines. The topics are well done with a good deal of pertinent information. Also there is a differential diagnosis in each of the topics. Another helpful and well done feature is that relevant H&P findings as well as lab findings list the significance of each to the specific diagnosis.

One puzzling thing is that a fair number of images are difficult to see on the handheld. While they can become infinitesimally small the images cannot be increased in size beyond its initial presentation.

The formulary has a small amount of information on the listed medications.

The 5 Minute Pediatric Consult drops a thumb in the Thumbs Up listing from 5 to 4. This is not really a result in a decrease in its quality but rather the failure to improve as well as continuing to take further advantage of evolving handheld capabilities. Other references are raising the bar and while this reference was one of the early leaders, in a few years it will be playing catch-up. Howver it remains one of, if not the best pediatric diagnosis reference.

Worth the Price? Yes

  • Strong clinical reference
  • Numerous helpful differential diagnosis lists
  • Specific information on lab and physical exam findings & their significance
  • Easy navigation

Bottom line:
This new classic pediatric reference comes across as a very strong handheld reference on specific diagnoses as well as augmenting differential diagnosis.
