Installation on Palm

 

Q:

Tungsten T5 / LifeDrive: How do I install products to the INTERNAL drive  or "LifeDrive" or SD card expansion memory from a Windows PC?
A: We have discovered some issues installing PDB files greater than 2MB to the device memory. You can install your product PDBs using the steps below to the INTERNAL expansion memory / drive.

NOTE: If you are installing a Skyscape Constellation the Constellation PRC and PDB must be installed to the device memory. (Ex: RNConstl.pdb and RNConslt.prc must be installed to device memory).

Step 1 Download product (if you haven't done so already, if you have skip to Step 2).

  1. Please download the Skyscape product from the product description page (at: http://www.skyscape.com) or the download link provided on your receipt.
  2. Save the productname_palmwin.exe file to your desktop.
Step 2 Replace the sscadmin.exe files.

    1. Go to My Computer .
    2. Go to C:\program files\common files\Skyscape
    3. Delete SSCAdmin.exe and artwork.dll.
    4. Please download the SSCAdmin.exe and artwork.dll from the following links  
    5. Choose Save.
    6. Save to C:\program files\common files\Skyscape. (Note : If you save the files onto your desktop or anywhere else, you will continue to have problems. Please ensure it is to this folder that you are saving the files.)
    7. Then go to the folder C:\Program files\Common files\Skyscape and check the version number of the files sscadmin.exe and artwork.dll. If you do not see the version number then the file did not download right. Please try downloading again after deleting it. If you see the version number as 3.4.15.0 for SSCAdmin.exe and 4.5.17.0 for artwork.dll, then the file has downloaded right.
    8. Once the files have been replaced, you will need to install your program.  Double click on the "My Skyscape" icon on your Desktop to open it.  Left click on the Palm tab. Select the program you are installing  and "Install" from the resulting pop-up box. 
    9. NOTE: After going through these steps, you may be required to perform an extra hotsync. If your hotsync interrupts, that is ok, just hotsync again to make sure that you can hotsync from start to finish.
If you continue  to have problems installing, please follow the steps below to install the program manually.

Step 3:  Install your database files manually to your handheld (Tungsten T5 or LifeDrive).

  1. Connect handheld to sync cable and cable to PC (recommend direct connect to PC, rather than USB hub).
  2. Go to Start | programs | PalmOne | PalmOne File Transfer Utility or Life Drive Manager.  If the Palm File Transfer Utility or Life Drive Manager does not recognize that your device is connected - try soft resetting the device and removing then reconnecting the cables. (to device and PC)
  3. Click the + sign next to INTERNAL (LifeDrive on LifeDrive device) on the left side of the screen to expand it, then click the + sign next to the Palm folder to expand it.
  4. Highlight the Palm folder. Click File | New Folder at the top and name this new folder Launcher. This Launcher folder should be located under the Palm folder. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT STEP. MISSPELLING THIS FOLDER OR PUTTING IT IN THE WRONG LOCATION WILL RESULT IN AN ERROR MESSAGE REGARDING DATA FILES NOT FOUND.
  5. Highlight the Launcher folder (AGAIN A VERY IMPORTANT STEP) Go to File | Copy files from PC.
  6. Change the look in field to C:\.
  7. Double click on the folder labeled Skyscape.
  8. Double click on the folder for the product. (ex: Archimedes)
  9. Double click on the version number folder. (ex: 7.0.35)
  10. Double click on the folder labeled Palm Install Files.
  11. Select the product pdb (ex: archimedes.pdb) - CTRL click on each file if there is more than one PDB. If you cannot see the file extensions (.pdb or .prc), then click on the view menu at the top of your screen and choose details from the list that appears. This will allow you to change your view so you see the details of each file.  You want to select only the files that have the description of Palm Database.  Do not add PDB files with noimg in the file name, since if the product has images you would want to install the images pdb not the no images (noimg.pdb).
  12. Click Open button.
  13. Wait for file transfer to complete.
NOTE:  Files installed to INTERNALdrive or LifeDrive are not viewable in Info or delete on the device.  To view use the Palm Transfer/LifeDrive manager Utility or Files on the device.
Step 4: Install the rest of the program using your Palm quick install


  1. Open your palm desktop. (Start | Programs | PalmOne | Palm Desktop).
  2. Click on the quick install tool button on the left side of the screen.
  3. Select your HotSync id from the user drop down menu.
  4. Click on the add button.
  5. Change the look in field to C:\.
  6. Double click on the folder labeled Skyscape.
  7. Double click on the folder for the product. (ex: Archimedes)
  8. Double click on the version number folder. (ex: 7.0.35)
  9. Double click on the folder labeled Palm Install Files.
  10. Locate the files ending in .prc or select the view button, click details and only get the files that have the description Palm Application.
  11. Click on open in the "open" window.
  12. These prc files MUST remain on the main memory of the device. Do not move them from the handheld section.
  13. Click X in the upper right corner of the Quick Install Tool window.
  14. Connect your palm to your desktop computer and push the HotSync button. The reader files and icon will be loaded to the main memory of the device and the data is already present based on the steps you performed earlier.
  15. Tap Reset when prompted on device.
  16. You will open the product from an icon on your handheld (look under ALL category or Skyscape category) to verify product is working. 
Step 5: Manually register your product(s) if you purchased the product and received a serial number.

Windows PC users automated registration:


  1. Connect your desktop PC to the Internet.
  2. Double click on the "My Skyscape" icon on your Desktop to open it.  Left click on the Palm tab.  Find the program you have installed and click on it.  You will be presented with Install, Register and Uninstall links.  Use the register link.
  3. Follow onscreen prompts.
  4. Enter serial number when prompted.
  5. Hotsync your device.
If you do not have an Active Internet connection on the PC you installed your product you may register online from another PC with Internet access.

  1. Open product you installed you will be prompted with an Unlock screen.
  2. Write down the Device ID as it is listed on the unlock screen.
  3. Log onto www.skyscape.com/register. If you downloaded the software from this website, logon as existing customer otherwise register as a new customer. It is very important that your email address be current because your unlock code and update information will be emailed to the email address in the Skyscape database. This information is not shared.
  4. Enter the unique serial number when prompted (see the back of brochure).
  5. Enter device ID when prompted to generate unlock code.
  6. Enter Unlock code into handheld unlock screen.
  7. Tap the Register or Unlock button.
