Installation on Palm

Q: How to transfer personal notes/ database to a new Palm device ?
A: ISSUE: Change of handhelds (Palm OS) how to transfer notes.

RESOLUTION:
The notes files are backed up on each hotsync to the backup directory.

WINDOWS  DESKTOP:

  1. Determine the backup directory for your hotsync id.
  2. Open the Palm Desktop software on your desktop computer
  3. Click on Tools
  4. Choose Options
  5. Note the data directory it may be one of the following
    • C:\Program Files\palmOne\
    • C:\Program Files\Palm\
    • C:\Program Files\Handspring\
    • C:\Program Files\Sony Handheld\
  6. Open My Computer
  7. Go to data directory in step 5
  8. Locate your hotsync id backup folder (see steps below to determine your hotsync backup folder)
  9. The personal databases and notes files are two PDB files in your hotsync id \backup folder. For example, the notes database for the product {Product Name} is called notes{product short name}.pdb (ex: notes5mcc2004.pdb) and the personal DB is called {product short name}PersonalDB.pdb (ex: 5mcc2004PersonalDB.pdb). When you perform a HotSync, your handheld device overwrites these files with the current personal notes and databases on your Palm device. You can backup these files at any time by copying them to your own backup folder on your PC.
  10. To restore these files:
    • Add these two files notes{product short name}.pdb (ex: notes5mcc2004.pdb) and the {product short name}PersonalDB.pdb (ex: 5mcc2004PersonalDB.pdb) to your Palm Install tool
    • Leave the destination as handheld
    • Hotsync the device.
MACINTOSH DESKTOP

  1. Locate the backup directory on your MAC (see below for steps.)
  2. You can backup these files at any time by copying them to your own backup folder on your MAC.
Determine Hotsync ID backup folder name:

WINDOWS DESKTOP:

  • The HotSync Manager assumes the first word in your user name is your first name, and the second word is your last name. It titles your user folder accordingly, with the second word followed by the first letter of the first word.
  • For example:
    •  If Bert's user name is Bert Pierce, his user folder is called PierceB and may be found at C:\Program Files\Palm\PierceB.
    • If Ida's user name is Ida Corwin, her user folder is CorwinI and may be found at C:\Program Files\Palm\CorwinI.
    • The naming scheme holds constant even if your user name isn't your real name. If, for example, Wally decided his user name should be Super Dude, his user folder would be called DudeS. If Maggie chose Maggie's Treo, her user folder would be called TreoM. There are some other naming conventions:
  • Only the first six characters of the second word in a user name are used in the folder name. Roger Thornhill's user folder is named ThornhR.
  • If the naming convention would create more than one folder with the same name, each folder after the first has a number appended to it. If Bert Pierce is joined by Mildred Pierce, Bert Pierce's folder is PierceB and Mildred Pierce's is PierceM. If Becky Pierce joins them later, her user folder would be named PierceB2.
MACINTOSH DESKTOP:

  • In Macintosh OS X, your individual user folder is usually in this path:
(Mac hard drive) : Users : (Your Mac username) : Documents : Palm : Users
  • In Macintosh OS 9 and earlier, your individual user folder usually located in this path:
(Mac hard drive) : Applications : Palm : Users
  • On a Macintosh, the title of your user folder is the same as your user name.
