Ila Kilen, RN, BSN, CWOCN-ET

I am a Certified Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse with a home health Agency. I use my RN Herbal and 5-Minute Herbal almost on a daily basis with my wound patients. Recently I saw a cardiac transplant patient with a very low iron level. The patient had been receiving blood transfusions at least weekly and couldn't tolerate iron supplements so I pulled out my PDA and opened up RN Herbal and located the appendices where the supplemental vitamins and minerals are listed. This lists includes those foods that provide different vitamins and minerals and of course, listed things like spinach, liver, lean red meats, poultry, fish, dried beans, etc. As a result of giving the patient this information, his iron count went up almost a whole point in 5 days! The cardiac surgeon was very impressed, because it was all done with diet info from Skyscape on my PDA - and no further transfusions were needed! I also have Griffiths 5-Minute Clinical Consult, ICD-9-CM, Signs and Symptoms, Handbook of Diagnostic Tests and Ident-A-Drug Reference 2004 and use them regularly.
